Graduate and Celebrate: Sheffield Children's University™

Certificates were presented by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Graham Oxley (above) and Dr Sonia Sharp, Executive Director of Children and Young People's Department, Sheffield (below)

There was lots to celebrate recently as 70 excited children went to Sheffield Town Hall with a parent or carer to receive special Children’s University™ Gold Award certificates and badges from the Lord Mayor, Councillor Graham Oxley and Executive Director of Children and Young People's Directorate, Sheffield City Council, Dr Sonia Sharp. This was a reward for taking part in a whole range of different Study Support activities such as art, sport, chess and music as part of their schools’ Extended Services programme.

The whole evening was a huge success, with children from Fox Hill, Mansel, Meynell, Monteney and Woodthorpe Primary Schools, Sheffield, receiving their Gold Awards for each managing to clock up over 100 hours of Study Support. One dedicated pupil from Woodthorpe Community Primary School managed to attend an incredible 244 hours of out of school activities!

There were speeches from Mansel Primary School Headteacher, Andrew Machell who talked about the importance of Children's University™ at the school, and the impact it has had, and from the University of Sheffield, Aimhigher Co-ordinator Gaynor Hamilton who introduced the Professor Fluffy project, which raises awareness and introduces higher education to children through a range of interactive and fun activities.

This is the first National Award ceremony to be held in Sheffield and we look forward to presenting more Award certificates later in the year.
