NEWS RELEASE 3.12.07
“The Big Pompey Day Out”
Adults have a fantastic opportunity to come and see their city through the eyes of their children. The Portsmouth Children’s University Gold and Platinum award winners were given the opportunity to make their own giant Pompey map on “The Big Pompey Day Out”. They are now being displayed for all to see at the City Museum from now until the end of December.
They visited places that they thought made Pompey great like the football club, the beach, Gunwharf and many many more. They also personalised their maps by putting where they lived, their school and where their family live. Each child created their own key for the map. The highlight of the day was when they were given a guided tour around Fratton Park football ground. They then came back to the Study Centre and created their own unique views of their city. At the end of the session each child received their map at A1 poster size for their bedroom wall. The children were taken out for a day as a reward for achieving either 200 or over 120 hours of extra learning on a Saturday, a fantastic achievement.
The Children’s University aims to help Portsmouth children find out about themselves, to help them learn in fun situations. We encourage them to find out what they are good at, as well as meeting people from other schools and experiencing new environments. We all hope that children will discover things they never thought they would have a chance to. We will encourage them to love learning, to extend their horizons and their life aspirations. The Children’s University (CU) is for children in Years 4, 5, 6 & 7. For more information please contact Jo Valentine on 02392 864121.
