Better Bridge Building Activity
Parents and children increase their general confidence in maths. Children will use various measuring equipment. Children will use real life budgeting skills. Parents and children will design and create bridge structures together. Introduction to methods and skills to use. Address when 'do we use division in everyday life' relate this to everyday activities to the group. Practice division methods. Introduce problem solving and mental strategies. Beyond Cowboys: the ‘Wild West’
Sharing World Stories – American stories that begin in Norfolk. In this activity, you will learn about the history and geography of the American ‘Wild West’ through looking at popular Hollywood films, maps, folk stories, legends, and United States politics. As you read about the ‘Wild West’ you will come to understand how difficult it is to find a definition for the American West both in terms of where it is, and when it was. Catching Dreams with Pocahontas
Sharing World Stories – American stories that begin in Norfolk. In this activity, you read the history of a real life Native American princess named Pocahontas and make a Native American dream catcher. As you write about Pocahontas, you will learn more about Native Americans, American history, and how America and Norfolk (the county in which you live) are connected. Also, as you make a piece of Native American Craft, you will understand more about the art, beliefs and folklore of different cultures. Code Club
Children will learn to code by making games, animations, and websites, using Scratch, then move on to Python. Part of the national Code Club scheme. The projects gradually introduce coding concepts to allow children to build their knowledge incrementally. The course lasts for one year, but initially children will sign up for one half term. Sharing World Stories – American stories that begin in Norfolk. In this activity, you will learn about the life and presidency of Abraham Lincoln, and his family connections to Norfolk. As you write a ‘proclamation’ to decide what laws you would make for your country if you were leader, you will develop your writing skills, and as you make an American flag, you will not only improve your art skills but also learn about the meanings behind the markings and designs on the flag itself. Legends to “Scare” and Share
Sunday 30th October 2.30-4.00 held in the Second Air Division Memorial Library (in the Millennium Library, The Forum) No booking required In this activity, children will listen to the famous American legend, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” written by Washington Irving. As they hear this tale, they will come to understand more about American History and the problems that faced Early Americans as they continued to fight for their new home in their new country. Also, as they craft their own urban legends, they will understand how to write a short story, and what makes for a good spooky fiction. Meet the Author
Tuesday 6th October: 4pm - 5pm Your chance to meet award winning author Guy Bass. Guy's book series includes Stitch Head, The Legend of Frog and Monster Madness / Monster Mayhem. He won a Blue Peter Book Award in 2010 for Dinkin Dings and the Frightening Things and has twice won the Portsmouth Book award. Guy's books are fabulously quirky and spooky, and appeal to boys and girls aged 7+. This FREE event will take place at the Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library at the Forum, Norwich. Children's University members can claim 1 hour in their Passport To Learning.

For each activity completed the children can present the evidence at their local library to receive a stamp. Summer Reading Challenge 2015 : Record Breakers
The Summer Reading Challenge 2015 starts in libraries on July 11. The theme for 2015 is Record Breakers, created in partnership with Guinness World Records ™, and the challenge to children is to read six library books of their choice during the summer holidays. Children join at their local library, and collect stickers at each stage of the challenge, at the same time finding out about some of the astonishing real-life achievements and world records featured in the Guinness World Records Books. Children’s University participants can also take their passport to their local library and have it stamped for one hour of Children’s University learning per book – so up to 6 hours of Children’s University learning if they read all 6 books. In addition, they can earn up to a further 4 hours if they complete extension activities or any specially organised local activities.

Summer Reading Challenge 2016
The Summer Reading Challenge is an annual challenge which takes place during the summer holidays. It is aimed at all school age children 5-11. The aim is to keep young people reading during the summer holidays and to prevent a ‘dip’ in reading age due to not reading as much during the school holidays The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children to explore their own reading choices and read for pleasure, whilst engaging parents with the aims of the challenge to help them support their children to complete the challenge. An additional challenge has been designed for pre-school children 0-5 so they can also take part.
