Summer Reading Challenge
Children are invited to participate in our annual Summer Reading Challenge. This is a national promotion organised by the Reading Agency. There is a different theme each year. Children can take their passport to their local library and have it stamped for 1 hour of Children's University learning per library book - so up to 6 hours of Children's University learning if they completed the Challenge and read all 6 books. And up to 10 hours if they took part in workshops or other linked activities. Research at national level has shown that participation in the Summer Reading Challenge means that children perform better at school on their return to studies after the summer break. It is a great way to get children enthusiastic about reading more – it can encourage them to read different authors, different genres as well as books written by the favourite author. Reading books and talking about the books they read also leads to a progression in their writing skills. Children can research their favourite authors online to find out more about them and how they became writers, this may inspire some of them to become writers themselves. Young people (the scheme is primarily aimed at 4-11 year olds) are invited to register for the challenge and then choose, read and review six books of their choice during the school summer holidays. Participants collect incentives along the way and all those who complete six books are given a certificate to mark their achievement. The Reading Agency run a tie in website: summerreadingchallenge.org.uk, where young people can post reviews, pose questions to authors and interact with their peers. Although ultimately it is down to the young people to choose their books, we do try hard to extend children’s range and experience of authors and books and aim to take them out of their “comfort zones” to an extent during the challenge.
