Storytelling: The Tempest by Shakespeare
After a warm-up and group-bonding activity (name game), learners will undertake an exercise where they use space physically and respond to verbal instructions to act out and/or use dramatic techniques to represent various emotions, character types, relationships and poetic descriptions derived from or relevant to the themes of The Tempest. This will extend to work in pairs and then a small group exercise where they portray a dramatic scene from the play (the shipwreck). They will then listen to the tutor’s narration of the story of Propsero’s lost dukedom, acting out at intervals aspects of the story in order to demonstrate their understanding of and to respond creatively to the narrative. Finally, they will undertake an exercise where they respond imaginatively to key words relating to the setting of the play, in order to recreate their own versions, stretching their vocabulary, to produce a ‘word carpet’ on large pieces of paper laid out on the floor, which they will then respond to and interact with using dramatic actions and techniques. • Demonstrate some understanding of key dramatic settings, emotional situations, character types and relationships which are represented in Shakespeare’s The Tempest, through the use of creative action and dramatic techniques. • To demonstrate some understanding of and respond creatively to some of the figurative language used by Shakespeare in the play • To respond imaginatively to key words in order to recreate settings from the play using increasing ambitious vocabulary choice.
