A celebration of creativity and performance, by and for young people in Norfolk.
A celebration of creativity and performance, by and for young people in Norfolk. 28th June to 10th July - 2017 Welcome to the Young Norfolk Arts Festival, a celebration of creativity and performance, by and for young people in Norfolk. It is my great pleasure to introduce the programme for the 2017 Young Norfolk Arts Festival. As you will see, the Festival, now in its fifth year, provides a vast range of opportunities for young people to watch and perform, to organise and report cultural activities right across the county. There are activities for primary and secondary schools in art-forms as varied as classical music to film-making, spoken word to visual art, drama and dance to contemporary music. Diversity and inclusion are important principles for us, so we very much hope that people of all ages will find something to interest you in the pages which follow. Creative expression is a key aspect of 21st century life, whether its action or expression, and we are very proud that YNAF is an increasingly important platform for the young people of this county, regardless of background. Yet all this educational aspiration is only possible because the events themselves will be terrific and stimulate the emotions of their audiences. We hope you will laugh, cry and be inspired. I look forward to seeing you around the Festival in due course. Steffan Griffiths Chairman, Young Norfolk Arts Trust

An Audience with Michael Morpurgo
We are pleased to present a very special opportunity to hear the well-known author and former Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo speaking about his books and what inspires his writing. Michael Morpurgo, OBE, is a best-selling author of over 130 books for children, including Private Peaceful, The Butterfly Lion, Kensuke’s Kingdom and War Horse, which first performed at the National Theatre in 2007. It continues to be performed at the New London Theatre to packed theatres. War Horse was released as a film directed by Steven Spielberg in January 2012. In 1976, Michael and his wife, Clare, started the charity Farms for City Children. The charity runs three farms around the country, in Gloucestershire, Pembrokeshire and North Devon. Each farm offers children and teachers from urban primary schools the chance to live and work in the countryside for a week, and gain hands-on experience. Michael’s latest novel is Listen to the Moon, which was published in 2014 by Harper Collins. There will be an opportunity to buy Michael Morpurgo’s books before or after the talk from the pop-up Jarrolds book shop at OPEN. Space is limited so do not miss this very rare opportunity.

Pro Patria Mori, by George Johnson
Sunday 3 July, 5.30pm The Secret Garden, No.68 The Close Free Directed by Max Mian ‘The Norwich School Classics Play this year details the final events of the life of Cicero, the great Roman orator. Pro Patria Mori, written in iambic pentameter is not only packed full of Classical allusions but also echoes Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. The play brings Rome under the Triumvirate of Antony, Octavius and Lepidus to life vividly. Following tradition, the play is pupil-led; its exploration of themes such as duty and revenge ensures the play not only resonates intellectually with a modern audience but also matches emotionally the Greek tragedies of Oedipus Rex and Electra.’ - Max Mian.
