Scarborough and North Yorkshire Children’s University

Who are we?

Scarborough & North Yorkshire Children’s University is hosted by the University of Hull via its North Yorkshire Partnership Hub, based in Scarborough.

We work in selected primary schools on the North Yorkshire Coast and in Ryedale and we are growing all the time.

We currently do not have the capacity to include individual members from outside our designated schools, or those who are home educated. We hope to be able to support these groups as we slowly expand.

Our partners and activities

We have over 60 official learning destinations which include businesses, museums and galleries, theatres and sports clubs, alongside specialist partners such as subject-specialists, first aid trainers and outward-bound centres. We also provide high quality, expert after-school clubs directly in our schools.

We have developed a range of additional learning resources, including activity books and personal challenges to ensure that less-advantaged children can be successful in our CU without having to spend a single penny.

With support from The University of Hull, Scarborough Borough Council and the North Yorkshire Coast Opportunity Area , and are working to address some of our area’s challenges, including: social mobility; school attainment, and cultural isolation.

We provide support staff directly into key schools in order to reach and mentor the most disadvantaged pupils.

Our new partnerships with the North Yorkshire County Council Virtual School for Looked After Children, and The Scarborough & Ryedale Young Carers, enable us to reach out to special groups of young people who are educated outside our current designated schools.

Our magnificent graduation ceremony takes place annually in July at Scarborough Spa Grand Hall in July.

In 2017-18, 98% of our parents agreed that our CU had improved their child’s engagement with independent learning. 90% said that CU had improved their child’s aspirations and motivation at school.
